Garmin has discreetly rolled out a highly anticipated security enhancement for its Fenix 7, Fenix 7 Pro, Epix (Gen 2), Epix Pro, and associated smartwatches. Despite its absence from the official changelog for Fenix 7 beta version 23.05, the long-requested device passcode feature is now available, offering users a new layer of protection for their data.
Activating Your Watch Passcode

To take advantage of this new security measure, ensure your Garmin smartwatch is running beta version 23.05 or a later release. The passcode can be enabled directly from your watch or through the Garmin Connect app.
From Your Watch:
- From the main watch face, press and hold the top-left button.
- Navigate to Watch Settings > System > Passcode > Set Passcode.
- You’ll then be prompted to input a unique 4-digit passcode of your choosing.
From the Garmin Connect App:
- Open the Garmin Connect app and select your watch from the list of connected devices.
- Proceed to System > Passcode.
- Here, you can select “On” to enable full device locking, or “Wallet only” if you prefer the passcode to apply exclusively to Garmin Pay.
Understanding the Passcode’s Functionality
Once activated, your Garmin device will automatically lock and require the passcode in a couple of scenarios: when the watch is taken off your wrist, or after a specific period of inactivity (typically every week). While locked, essential functionalities such as ongoing workouts, alerts, the flashlight, and the ability to answer incoming calls remain accessible. However, the majority of your data fields will be secured, necessitating passcode entry for access.
The Significance of This Update
Before this update, passcode support on the Fenix 7 series was limited solely to Garmin Pay transactions. Garmin’s broader initiative in February to introduce full-device passcode protection across its platform aimed to align its security offerings more closely with competitors like Apple and Samsung. However, the initial exclusion of the Fenix 7 series from this crucial security upgrade was a considerable disappointment for users who prioritize privacy and the safeguarding of sensitive health data.
After a nearly six-month wait, the Fenix 7 and Epix (Gen 2) series have quietly received this long-awaited security enhancement. This integration, brought about by a beta update and diligent investigation by the Garmin user community, addresses a significant gap and provides users with enhanced control over their personal information.
