Garmin Edge 1050 Gets Fresh Stable Update 13.13: New Features & Bug Fixes

Garmin is injecting a dose of dynamism into its popular Edge 1050 cycling computer with the release of the stable version 13.13 software update. This latest iteration brings a suite of enhancements designed to refine the user experience, boost performance, and expand compatibility with cutting-edge cycling technology.

Visual Flair and Enhanced Data Presentation

Cyclists who rely on real-time performance metrics will appreciate the addition of animations across various graphs, gauges, and glances. This subtle but effective change promises to make data visualization more engaging and intuitive, allowing riders to absorb crucial information at a glance during their rides.

Seamless Software Updates and Expanded Component Compatibility

Staying up-to-date will now be even easier thanks to the enablement of software updates over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This eliminates the need for wired connections for many users, streamlining the update process. Furthermore, the Edge 1050 now officially supports Campagnolo’s advanced 13-speed groupsets, catering to riders who prefer the Italian manufacturer’s precision engineering.

Enhanced Device Management and Navigation Flexibility

The update also introduces practical improvements to device management. Varia Vue users will now have the convenience of reformatting their SD cards directly through the Edge 1050. For those who like to explore familiar routes in reverse, a new feature allows riders to save a course in the opposite direction, opening up new perspectives on well-trodden paths.

Streamlined Communication and Improved Stability

Group riding enthusiasts will benefit from an 8-second timeout added to the Spectator Messaging prompt, preventing accidental interruptions. Addressing potential frustrations, the update now includes an error prompt for failed software updates, providing clearer feedback to users. Garmin has also focused on core device functionality, implementing improvements to altimeter accuracy through barometer outlier rejection and enhancing the user experience when pairing secure BLE sensors.

Performance Optimizations and Data Integrity

Riders who frequently tackle long and complex routes will be pleased to hear about performance improvements when loading large courses. The Edge 1050 also gains a more intelligent approach to gear preset selection, automatically applying a valid configuration even when a shifting system initially reports a non-standard gear count. Furthermore, the handling of missing elevation data in elevation graphs has been refined, ensuring a more consistent and reliable display. Map Manager error handling has also been improved for smoother navigation-related tasks.

Varia Vue Enhancements and Garmin Coach Refinements

Support for the Garmin Varia Vue cycling awareness system has been further enhanced, promising a more seamless integration. For users following structured training plans, several fixes address issues related to Garmin Coach. These include resolving instances where dynamic glances wouldn’t update, ClimbPro displaying incorrect climb lengths or being incorrectly disabled, and Garmin Coach incorrectly showing rest days. The update also tackles problems preventing ‘Improve Fitness’ plans from syncing and issues that could lead to activity data not saving.

Workout Precision and Navigation Reliability

Accuracy during workouts has been improved with a fix for incorrect time remaining when activities are paused. Navigation reliability sees a tweak with the ‘Stop Navigation’ option no longer disappearing prematurely. Visual consistency is addressed with a fix for the battery status icon in low battery warnings. Power and heart rate zones are now reordered to align with Garmin Connect, presenting data in a familiar high-to-low sequence.

Bug Squashing and General Polish

Several specific bugs have been addressed in this update. The GroupRide glance now accurately reflects the number of riders, sensor names are displayed correctly, and duplicate data screen entries are no longer created. Manual Wi-Fi sync will now accurately report its status, and the “add” icon for Points of Interest (POI) is now visible in Course Creator.

The missing tone when connecting new sensors has been restored, and the start timer reminder tone on non-data screens has been removed for a cleaner experience. Issues with the Accept button in connection prompts and pairing third-party power meters via Bluetooth have also been resolved. Finally, the update includes fixes for segment deletion in the settings menu and color persistence on power off page options, alongside general improvements to device stability and various other minor bug fixes, ensuring a more robust and enjoyable cycling experience.
