Garmin Fenix 8 Pro gets stable software update 18.51: What’s new?

Garmin is pushing out a significant stable software update, version 18.51, for its high-end Fenix 8 Pro series. This update is available for both the AMOLED and MicroLED models, bringing a host of improvements and fixes aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.

Enhanced Communication and Messaging Features

A number of the key improvements in this release focus on communication. For users who rely on the device for messaging, the new update provides a better layout for chat threads, ensuring that the beginning of longer messages is centered properly for easier reading. The responsiveness of Messenger calls has also been improved, and a consistent experience is now guaranteed when ending a Messenger call, whether you’re on a Bluetooth or LTE connection. Additionally, recording a voice message will now automatically pause any music playing on your device, a small but convenient feature. The layout of incoming Messenger call notifications during activities has also been optimized to be less intrusive.

General System Improvements and Bug Fixes

Beyond messaging, Garmin has addressed several issues to make the Fenix 8 Pro more reliable. The initial setup process has been fine-tuned to prevent it from moving past the pairing page too quickly. A bug related to the list trackbar position in the assistance menu has been resolved, and a potential crash when exiting voice notes or voice message playback has been fixed. The update also corrects an issue where the NTN pointer animation could get stuck or frozen. For those with the MicroLED model, a specific touchscreen firmware update (v3.05) is included to improve its performance.

How to Get the Update

Garmin has made the update process straightforward for users. For most people, the update will be downloaded automatically behind the scenes when the Fenix 8 Pro is connected to your phone via the Garmin Connect app. You can also manually check for the update on your watch by navigating to Main Menu > Settings > System > Software Update and then selecting Check for Updates. Alternatively, you can connect your watch to a computer and use the Garmin Express desktop software, which will automatically check for and download any available updates.
