Garmin Forerunner 980: Predicting the Release Date & 5 Features I’m Begging For

The Garmin Forerunner 900 series has long been the gold standard for triathletes and serious marathoners. After the massive success of the Forerunner 965 and the more recent arrival of the Forerunner 970 series, the buzz in the running community is already shifting toward what comes next.

As someone who tracks every firmware beta and sensor leak, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the Garmin Forerunner 980. While Garmin remains tight-lipped, we can look at historical patterns and current tech trends to predict when we might see it and what features I’m personally hoping will make the cut.

When will the Garmin Forerunner 980 be released?

Garmin’s high-end Forerunner cycle has become more predictable lately, typically following a 2-year refresh window.

  • Forerunner 955: June 2022

  • Forerunner 965: March 2023 (A quick pivot to AMOLED)

  • Forerunner 970: Early 2025

Given that the Forerunner 970 and 975 models have recently hit the market, I expect the Forerunner 980 release date to be in early 2027. Garmin often targets the “Spring Marathon Season” (March/April) for these launches to capture runners training for Boston or London.

My Garmin Forerunner 980 Wishlist: 5 Must-Have Features

The Forerunner 970 brought us the Elevate Gen 5 sensor and some incredible software tweaks, but for the 980 to be a true “generational leap,” here is what I want to see:

1. LTE Connectivity (The Real Kind)

It’s time. While Garmin has dabbled with LTE for safety features, I’m wishing for a Forerunner 980 that offers true phone-free connectivity. I want to receive a text or stream Spotify without carrying my phone or relying on pre-downloaded playlists. If the Fenix 8 Pro is moving in this direction, the flagship Forerunner shouldn’t be left behind.

2. Dual-Layer Display (Micro-LED or Solar-AMOLED)

We all love the AMOLED screen on the 965 and 970, but battery life still takes a hit compared to the old MIP displays. My “dream” feature is a Solar-AMOLED hybrid or a transition to Micro-LED. This would provide the vibrant colors we love with significantly better power efficiency, potentially pushing “Always-On” battery life past the 10-day mark even with heavy GPS use.

3. ECG and Skin Temperature Tracking across All Regions

While the hardware is often there, the software rollout for ECG has been fragmented globally. For the 980, I’m hoping for a seamless, day-one integration of medical-grade ECG and continuous skin temperature monitoring to better predict illness and recovery—features that competitors like Apple and Samsung are already leaning into heavily.

4. Advanced “Smart” Navigation

The mapping on the 900 series is already the best in the business, but I’d love to see AI-driven routing. Imagine telling your watch, “Find me a 10-mile shaded route with less than 200ft of elevation,” and having it generated on-device instantly without needing to open Garmin Connect.

5. Inductive Charging

This might be controversial for some, but I’m ready for Garmin to move away from the proprietary plug. Qi-compatible wireless charging (or a more secure inductive magnetic puck) would reduce port wear and make it easier to juice up the watch using the reverse wireless charging on our phones.

Final Thoughts

The Forerunner 980 is still a way off, but the roadmap looks promising. With Garmin recently pushing more “Health Status” features directly into the app and improving the bi-directional data flow with partners like Peloton, the ecosystem is stronger than ever.
