Garmin is beginning the rollout of its new beta software update, version 15.09, for two of its popular GPS running smartwatches: the Forerunner 970 and the Forerunner 570. This update focuses on enhancing performance, adding convenience features, and resolving a variety of bugs to improve the overall user experience on these devices.
Key Performance Enhancements and New Features
A primary focus of this update is to refine performance metrics for runners. The watch’s pace tracking has been improved to be notably more responsive, providing athletes with faster, more accurate real-time feedback during their runs. For users who engage in indoor climbing activities, version 15.09 introduces an automatic button lock function, preventing accidental presses during intense sessions. Furthermore, the update adds hotkey support for the built-in calculator, making the utility more accessible with a quick button combination.
Resolutions for Stability and Display Issues
Several critical bugs related to device stability have been addressed. The update fixes an issue that could cause the watch to repeatedly reset, a significant problem for some users. It also resolves a glitch where the screen could turn off prematurely following a goal alert notification. Additionally, Garmin fixed a minor display issue where the device was not highlighting the previously selected item when navigating back to the main apps and activities list, ensuring a smoother interface experience. The correct icon is now also displayed for the walk indoor activity.
Corrections for Connectivity and Training
Connectivity and sound fidelity have also seen targeted fixes. Garmin has reduced sound distortion or choppiness that could occur when initiating the phone’s voice assistant feature. A persistent problem where an “Unable to Connect” message was incorrectly displayed when pairing the watch with Bluetooth headphones has been resolved. For users following a structured plan, the update fixes a synchronization issue where the Garmin Run Coach plan’s week number on the watch did not match the one shown in the Garmin Connect Mobile app. Finally, the ability to view historical weather averages for race events linked to a course is restored, fixing a prior display failure. The release also includes standard translation updates and addresses other various minor issues.
How to Get the Update
Users enrolled in the beta program can check for and manually download version 15.09 directly onto their Forerunner device. To initiate the process, navigate to the main menu on your watch and select Settings, then System, choose Software Update, and finally select Check For Updates.
