Garmin is pushing out a new beta software update, version 17.22, to a select group of its advanced smartwatches. This update targets the Fenix 8, Fenix E, Enduro 3, and Tactix 8 series. It introduces a new quality-of-life feature and implements several important bug fixes, enhancing both the user interface and overall device stability.
Note: The Beta software available for the Fenix 8 series will have the ECG feature and Dive features disabled.
Enhanced Navigation and User Experience
One of the most notable additions in this update is the new “Stop Navigation” option. Previously, ending an active navigation session could sometimes feel clunky, requiring users to dig through multiple menus. Now, this functionality is directly accessible from both the Activity Stage and Navigation Menus. This change streamlines the process, allowing athletes and adventurers to quickly end a route without interrupting their workout or activity, making for a smoother and more intuitive user experience.
Addressing Key Software Glitches
Beyond the new feature, this update is crucial for its bug fixes. Garmin has resolved a specific issue related to the Do Not Disturb (DND) settings. Previously, when a user turned off smart notifications within the DND menu, it would incorrectly disable all-day notifications and alerts as well. This bug could lead to missed important notifications, but it has now been fixed, ensuring that notifications behave as expected.
Another significant fix addresses a problem with the device’s countdown timer. After an incorrect passcode was entered, the timer would sometimes display an invalid timeout, which could be confusing. The software update corrects this, ensuring that the timer functions reliably and displays accurate information. These bug fixes demonstrate Garmin’s commitment to refining its software for a more stable and reliable user experience.
How to Manually Install the Update
For users who want to access the latest features and fixes immediately, the beta update is available for manual installation. You can check for the update directly on your device. Simply navigate to the main menu and follow these steps: Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates. Once found, the new software will download and install, bringing your watch up to version 17.22.
