Garmin releases new beta update 30.17 for Edge 1050, 1040, 850, 840, 550, and 540

Garmin has officially begun the rollout of its latest Beta Software Version 30.17, targeting a wide range of its premium cycling computers. This update is designed to refine the user experience by addressing specific bugs and enhancing visual navigation tools that cyclists rely on during diverse training sessions.

The update is currently available for the following devices:

  • Edge 1040 & 1050

  • Edge 840 & 850

  • Edge 540 & 550

Key Enhancements and Bug Fixes

  • Fixed course issue while doing indoor activities.
  • Improved compass arrow on track up maps.

The primary focus of version 30.17 is stability and navigational precision. One of the most notable fixes involves a persistent course-loading error that occurred specifically during indoor training sessions. This ensures that cyclists using smart trainers can follow their pre-planned routes without technical interruptions.

Additionally, Garmin has fine-tuned the compass arrow interface. When riders use the “Track Up” map orientation, the compass arrow now offers improved responsiveness and accuracy, making it easier to maintain orientation during complex maneuvers or off-road excursions.

How to Install the Update

If your device is enrolled in the Beta program, you can trigger the download immediately via Wi-Fi. Garmin recommends ensuring your device has at least 50% battery life before starting the installation process.

To manually fetch the update, follow these steps on your Edge device:

  1. Open the Main Menu.

  2. Navigate to System.

  3. Select About.

  4. Tap Check for Updates.
