WhatsApp Officially Lands on Garmin Smartwatches: Full Support for Over a Dozen Models

In a significant move for the Garmin ecosystem, Meta has officially launched a dedicated WhatsApp application on the Connect IQ store. This release marks a shift from simple notification mirroring to a more integrated, standalone app experience, allowing users to manage their conversations directly from a selection of Garmin’s most advanced smartwatches.

Enhanced Messaging Capabilities

The new WhatsApp client offers much more than the basic “Quick Replies” found in previous software iterations. Users can now access a history of their 10 most recent conversations without needing to touch their smartphones.

Communication is also more interactive; the app supports the use of the on-device keyboard for typing custom responses, as well as the ability to send emojis and message reactions. However, it is worth noting that while the keyboard is functional, the current version does not yet support voice dictation. Furthermore, while users will receive alerts for incoming WhatsApp calls, the functionality is limited to declining calls from the wrist rather than answering them.

The Exclusive Compatibility List

The rollout is highly specific, targeting Garmin’s newest hardware generations. If you own a device released within the last cycle, you are likely eligible, but several popular older models have notably been excluded.

Supported Devices Include:

  • Lifestyle & Adventure: Venu 4, Venu X1, and Vivoactive 6.

  • Performance & Multisport: Fenix 8 (including Solar and Pro variants), Fenix E, and Enduro 3.

  • Specialty & Aviation: Tactix 8, Quatix 8, Quatix 8 Pro, and D2 Air X15.

  • Running: Forerunner 970 and Forerunner 570.

Notable Omissions: Surprisingly, high-end legacy devices like the Fenix 7 series and the Enduro 2 are not supported. Additionally, despite being relatively recent releases, the Forerunner 165 and the Instinct 3/Instinct E series are currently missing from the compatibility list, which may disappoint long-time fans of those rugged lines.

Technical Requirements and Connectivity

Unlike “standalone” apps on cellular-enabled watches like the Apple Watch Ultra, this WhatsApp version still relies on a tethered connection. The app pulls data directly from a paired Android or iOS smartphone via the Garmin Connect ecosystem. This means that if your watch is out of Bluetooth range from your phone, the WhatsApp app will lose its functionality.

How to Install the New Update

The application is available globally as a free download. To get started, users must navigate to the Garmin Connect IQ Store (either via the mobile app or a desktop), search for WhatsApp, and ensure their watch firmware is up to date. As Garmin continues to pivot toward a more “smart-first” approach, this integration represents a major step in making their devices as useful for daily communication as they are for elite athletic tracking.
