Garmin releases new beta update 29.12 for Edge 1050, 1040, 850, 840, 550, and 540 series

Garmin has begun the rollout of a significant new beta software update, version 29.12, targeting a wide array of its popular Edge cycling computers. This firmware brings a host of stability improvements, new features, and crucial refinements to enhance the riding experience for users of the Edge 1050, 1040, 850, 840, 550, and 540 series.

Core Enhancements for Data Accuracy and Group Riding

A primary focus of this update across all listed devices is the refinement of key performance metrics and social features. The Total Ascent Metric has received a substantial overhaul. Garmin states this improvement is designed to filter out insignificant fluctuations, ensuring that the device only accumulates “meaningful ascents.” This should provide a more reliable and consistent summation of notable climbs throughout an activity, offering cyclists a clearer picture of their total climbing effort.

For riders who frequently use the GroupRide feature, a valuable new addition is the inclusion of real-time data averages. This allows groups to see aggregated performance data on the fly, making it easier to gauge group pace and effort during a shared ride. Furthermore, a long-standing bug related to multilingual support has been addressed: the issue of audio prompts always playing in English has been fixed, allowing riders to correctly hear alerts in their preferred language. Finally, all units will benefit from an improved map compass arrow and general fixes that bolster device stability and squash various minor bugs.

Exclusive Features Elevate the Edge 1050, 850, and 550 Experience

The newest generation of Edge computers—the 1050, 850, and 550—are receiving a richer set of enhancements in this beta. A significant new safety feature is the introduction of cycling safety voice alerts, which can be enabled in the audio prompts menu, providing spoken notifications to keep the rider informed of potential hazards.

The flagship Edge 1050 model, in particular, receives a premium suite of exclusive features. Power Guide users will now benefit from the inclusion of an altitude factor and power guide altitude acclimation, making its suggested power targets far more relevant in mountainous or high-altitude terrain. Furthermore, the 1050 is being upgraded with smarter ride-long support: smart nutrition/hydration fueling alerts help riders maintain optimal performance by prompting them to eat or drink at appropriate times. Post-ride analysis is also getting a boost with the addition of shifting data to the post-ride overview. Finally, for practical use, the 1050’s interface sees general UI improvements alongside the integration of a weather radar map, keeping the rider informed of local meteorological conditions.

How To Get This Beta Update

Once your Garmin Edge device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, you can initiate the software download directly on the unit. Simply access the Main Menu, then tap on System, select About, and finally choose Check For Update to prompt the device to search for and install the latest available beta firmware.
