Garmin rolls out major stable update 29.22 for Edge 1050, 850, 550: New features & bug fixes

Garmin has commenced the stable rollout of Software Version 29.22 for its popular lineup of cycling computers, including the Edge 1050, Edge 850, and Edge 550 models. This extensive update brings a host of new features, significant improvements, and crucial bug fixes aimed at enhancing the riding experience, safety, and performance analysis for cyclists. While all models receive valuable updates, the premium Edge 1050 gets the most expansive set of new capabilities.

Exclusive Enhancements for the Edge 1050

The flagship Edge 1050 sees the addition of several sophisticated features focused on advanced performance and safety. Riders can now benefit from smart nutrition and hydration fueling alerts, ensuring they maintain optimal energy levels throughout their ride. For those training with power, the Power Guide has been made more accurate with the altitude factor enabled, and a new power guide altitude acclimation feature helps manage effort in varying elevations. Enhanced situational awareness is provided by the new weather radar map, alongside general UI improvements for a smoother interface. Post-ride analysis is also boosted with the inclusion of shifting data in the ride overview, offering deeper insight into gear usage.

Shared Features and Safety Improvements for All Models

The stable update introduces key features that span all three devices: the Edge 1050, 850, and 550. A major focus has been placed on group riding and safety. All supported models now boast the ability to share Timing Gates via Garmin Share, facilitating more structured group events. Furthermore, GroupRide real-time data averages are now available, letting riders instantly see collective performance metrics. A significant safety addition is the inclusion of cycling safety voice alerts, which can be enabled via the audio prompts menu to provide critical notifications without diverting attention from the road. All units also receive a convenient double-tap shortcut to ring the virtual bell while riding, adding a quick way to alert pedestrians or other cyclists. Finally, a new cycling ability history graph gives users a visual way to track their fitness progression over time.

Stability Fixes and General Improvements

Beyond the new features, Garmin has also focused on device stability and user experience across the board. A persistent bug where audio prompts always played in English has been successfully fixed, ensuring localized language settings are respected. The map compass arrow has received improvements for better navigational clarity. As is typical with major software releases, this update also includes general improvements to device stability and addresses various minor bugs reported by users, ensuring reliable operation for every ride.

How to Install Software Version 29.22

To update your compatible Edge device (1050, 850, or 550), you must have your device connected to a Wi-Fi network. Simply follow these steps on your cycling computer:

  1. Navigate to the Main Menu.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.

The device will then prompt you to download and install the new Software Version 29.22.
