Garmin has expanded its lineup of dive computers with the global launch of the Descent X30. This new model, which comes just a few months after the release of the Descent S1 smart buoy, offers a blend of advanced features and a more accessible price point. Its design and functionality make it a strong contender for divers who want premium features without the hefty price tag of top-tier models.
Key Features and Dive-Ready Design
The Descent X30 is built with clarity and durability in mind. It features a large, 2.4-inch color LCD screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. While the exact brightness isn’t specified, Garmin describes the display as “vivid” and easy to read. Divers can see crucial information at a glance, including depth metrics, a compass, and water temperature. The device also supports a wide range of dive profiles and features surface GPS to mark entry and exit points. After a dive, logs are automatically synced to the Garmin Dive app via Bluetooth.
Navigating the computer is a simple task thanks to four large, leak-proof metal buttons that are easy to use even when wearing gloves. The flip-screen mode is a handy feature that allows you to orient the buttons at the top or bottom of the device to suit your gear setup best. In a nod to sustainability, the device’s housing and bezel are made entirely from recycled plastic. The rugged build gives it a dive rating of 10 ATM, which is suitable for depths up to 100 meters.
Performance and Pricing
The Descent X30 is powered by an integrated lithium-ion battery, providing solid performance for your dives. You can expect up to 30 hours of use on medium brightness or about 10 hours on high brightness. This is a very welcome feature for extended dive trips.
The dive computer is priced at $749.99, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to Garmin’s older, premium models. For example, it comes in at roughly half the cost of the Descent X50i, which retails for around $1,499.99. While the X50i features a larger 3-inch touchscreen and a higher 20 ATM dive rating, the X30 offers a compelling alternative for divers seeking essential functionality at a more affordable price.
