Garmin recently rolled out its massive software update, bringing hands-free voice control and other exciting features to a wide lineup of smartwatches. As we covered in our previous breakdown of the massive Q3 2026 update, these features were designed to make hands-free control and smart tracking easier than ever.
However, a major convenience often comes with a hidden cost. Since the update landed, users across the globe have noticed a shocking drop in their daily battery life, and it all traces back to the “OK Garmin” wake word.
What the Community is Saying on Reddit and Forums

When the update first hit, it didn’t take long for smartwatch owners to notice that their battery life estimates had essentially been cut in half.
Over on Reddit, users began questioning just how heavy a toll the new voice feature would take. Reddit user MetalEspressoWatch pointed out that testing the feature on beta builds chopped the daily battery runtime right in half—comparing the constant microphone drain to the heavy battery toll of keeping an Always-On Display (AOD) turned on. Another user, Gozerhead67, confirmed the same behavior on their device.
Meanwhile, official Garmin support forums quickly filled up with complaints from frustrated owners:
-
Forerunner 970: User 8535299 on the Forerunner 970 forum reported that their fully charged battery estimate dropped sharply from 15 days down to just 9 days. Turning off the “OK Garmin” setting immediately restored the full 15-day estimate, proving the feature was stealing nearly five days of battery life.
-
Fenix 8 & Quatix 8: Users updating to firmware version 23.31 ran into immediate power issues. User AndrewBarclay noted that their Fenix 8 battery estimate plummeted from 21 days down to 12 days, while user 5886860 shared that their 51mm AMOLED display estimate dropped from 16 days down to just 8 days right after updating and fully charging. Similarly, user Bob1951Quatix8 reported that their Quatix 8 estimate went straight from 14 days down to 7 days.
Many owners noted that the feature was automatically enabled right after the update, catching people off guard and making them think their watch was glitching or draining abnormally fast.
Which Garmin Watches Support the Feature?
According to Garmin’s official support documentation, the hands-free “OK Garmin” voice command feature and its subsequent battery impact affect a broad range of high-end and mid-range devices across their product lineup, including:
-
Fenix Series: fēnix 8 series and fēnix 9 series
-
Forerunner Series: Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970
-
Venu Series: Venu 4 and Venu X1
-
Outdoor & Tactical: tactix 8 series, quatix 8 series, and Enduro 4
-
Approach Golf Watches: Approach S72 series
-
Aviation & Premium: D2 Air X15, D2 Mach 2 series, and MARQ (Gen 3) series
Because all of these devices rely on continuous microphone monitoring to catch the wake word, owners across every single one of these categories are vulnerable to the same unexpected power drain.
Why Is “OK Garmin” Such a Battery Hog?
The reason for the massive battery drain is simple physics and software processing. For a smartwatch to listen for the phrase “OK Garmin,” the microphone must stay active and continuously monitor background audio. Even when you aren’t talking to your watch, the internal hardware is working around the clock to catch that specific wake word.
Garmin actually includes a warning in its system notes letting users know that enabling voice wake words will impact overall battery endurance. Because the watch never truly lets the microphone rest, it burns through power much faster than it would during normal daily use.
How to Fix the Battery Drain on Your Watch
If you have noticed your battery life plummeting since your last update, you do not have to live with it. Fortunately, fixing the issue takes only a few seconds:
-
Go into your watch Settings.
-
Navigate to System and then Voice.
-
Locate the “OK Garmin” wake-word toggle and turn it off.
-
Check for any separate phone assistant wake words and disable them if needed.
As forum members Bob1951Quatix8 and AndrewBarclay discovered after toggling the setting off, doing this instantly restored their devices back to normal—AndrewBarclay saw their runtime jump right back from 12 days up to 23 days, while Bob1951Quatix8 returned their Quatix 8 to its full 14-day charge estimate.
Turning off hands-free voice control does not mean you lose voice features completely. You can still use voice commands whenever you want by simply activating them manually through a button shortcut or the controls menu.
For most everyday users, giving up nearly half of a watch’s battery life just to avoid pressing a button isn’t worth the trade-off. Disabling the wake word is a quick fix that will instantly bring your Garmin back to its legendary, long-lasting battery performance.
