Garmin Introduces Edge 550 and 850 with Advanced Features: What’s New?

Garmin has unveiled its latest lineup of cycling computers, the Edge 550 and Edge 850, designed to give riders an edge in performance, preparation, and safety. These compact devices feature a vibrant 2.7-inch color display and a powerful battery that can last up to 36 hours in battery saver mode, making them ideal companions for both intense training sessions and long-distance rides. They come packed with innovative features that go beyond basic tracking, providing cyclists with the insights and tools needed to optimize their experience on two wheels.

Enhanced Training and Performance Insights

The new Edge series takes a smarter approach to training. Cyclists can benefit from adaptive Garmin Cycling Coach plans that automatically adjust based on their training progress, recovery, and the specific demands of their planned route. New cycling ability insights analyze a rider’s strengths and weaknesses, helping them understand how their performance stacks up on different types of terrain or courses. For those long, challenging rides, smart fueling alerts provide timely reminders to eat and drink, with recommendations tailored to the heat, humidity, and intensity of the effort. Riders can also stay a step ahead of the weather with real-time weather overlays that display live radar and wind updates directly on the device’s screen.

Group Riding and Gear Analysis

The Edge 550 and 850 also introduce several features for social and mountain biking. With GroupRide comparisons, riders can easily see how their stats compare to others in their pack, adding a fun, competitive element to group rides. When paired with electronic shifting, the new Gear Ratio Analysis gives a detailed breakdown of how much time a cyclist spends in each gear, offering valuable data for improving efficiency. For mountain bikers, dedicated profiles support specific disciplines like enduro and downhill, featuring detailed 5 Hz GPS tracking for enhanced accuracy.

Edge 850: Exclusive Premium Features

The Edge 850 offers a suite of exclusive upgrades. It includes a built-in speaker that functions as a digital bike bell, provides turn-by-turn navigation prompts, and alerts riders for workouts. The device’s touchscreen navigation allows for easy point-by-point course creation, providing greater control and flexibility on the road. For added convenience, the Edge 850 also supports Garmin Pay contactless payments, making quick mid-ride stops a breeze.

Prioritizing Rider Safety

Both the Edge 550 and 850 are built with safety in mind. They integrate core Garmin safety features, including incident detection and LiveTrack, which allow family and friends to monitor a rider’s location in real time. The devices are also compatible with Garmin’s Varia radars and cameras, offering an extra layer of awareness. A new community-based feature allows cyclists to receive and report road hazard alerts, contributing to a safer riding environment for everyone.

Pricing and Availability

The new cycling computers are available now, with the Edge 550 priced at $499.99 and the premium Edge 850 available for $599.99.
