Garmin has released a new beta software update, version 28.10, for its popular Edge 1040, Edge 840, and Edge 540 cycling computers. This update introduces a range of enhancements and crucial bug fixes aimed at improving the overall user experience for cyclists.
Key New Features and Improvements
Cyclists using these Edge devices will benefit from several notable additions. Garmin has integrated Forksight Enhancements, a feature previously seen on their mountain bike (MTB) specific Edge models, which should provide more detailed trail insights. For multi-sport athletes, there’s now support for viewing adaptive training plans specifically for triathlons, making it easier to follow structured workouts.
Satellite acquisition is set to become much faster with the enablement of Short-Term Ephemeris (GPES). Furthermore, the update includes updated GNSS, sensor, ANT, BLE, NFC, and Bluetooth libraries, promising more reliable and stable connectivity across various accessories and devices.
Interface and Data Display Refinements
Several user interface and data display issues have been addressed. The update fixes a bug where the radar “halo” (which alerts riders to approaching vehicles) sometimes didn’t appear when a turn prompt was visible, enhancing safety. The Connected-POI dynamic glance layout has been updated, likely offering a more intuitive display of points of interest. A significant change for those chasing KOMs or personal bests is that segment target data will now always show during segment efforts on both the map and segment data screens.
The update also adds the ability to toggle Virtual Partner off for courses, providing more flexibility for riders who prefer to ride without that constant pacing indicator. For quick glance information, the home-page profile button now shows the current ride distance while recording, a handy addition for tracking progress at a glance. Minor visual tweaks include the removal of the bottom divider line and repositioning of the page indicator on the wallet card carousel.
Bug Fixes and Stability Enhancements
A series of important bug fixes are part of this release. Issues such as the shifting data field occasionally showing incorrect battery levels and the workout-duration picker not scrolling via touch have been resolved. The update also addresses workout data fields resetting after a sport-profile merge and fixes route-recalculation failures when using Topo 2025.10 maps. Other fixes include music-controls button highlight persisting in some cases and the speed gauge failing to display. Overall, Garmin states that the update includes stability improvements and minor bug fixes to enhance the reliability of the devices.
How to Install the Update
To install the beta software update, ensure your Garmin Edge device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Then, navigate to the Main Menu, select System, choose About, and finally select Check For Updates.
