Garmin Watches Users Can Now Download a Live Map of the Stars for Free

Garmin smartwatches are famous for tracking steps, measuring heart rates, and navigating rugged hiking trails. However, a clever new software addition is encouraging users to stop looking down at the trail and start looking up at the night sky.

An independent developer has created Stargazer, a unique custom watch face available on the Garmin Connect IQ Store. Instead of just displaying the time and your daily step count, Stargazer transforms your wrist into a live, miniature space observatory.

How It Works

Most smartwatches require you to open a heavy, battery-draining app if you want to look at space data. Stargazer changes that by running directly on your main screen every time you glance at your watch.

The software uses your Garmin’s built-in GPS to figure out exactly where you are standing on Earth. Using that location data, it calculates the precise, real-time positions of:

  • The sun and the moon

  • The planets in our solar system

  • The 300 brightest stars in the night sky

When you look at your watch, you get a live map of the cosmos matching the sky right above your head. If you are camping or out for a late-night walk, you can simply lift your wrist to identify a bright planet or a major constellation.

Space Tracking Without the Battery Drain

One of the biggest challenges for smartwatch developers is making cool features that do not kill the battery. Because Stargazer is built efficiently as a watch face rather than a complex, interactive app, it provides a seamless way to track astronomy data without constantly draining your device.

The basic version of Stargazer is completely free to download and use. For casual stargazers, the free version offers plenty of data to get started. However, the developer has put a few deeper visual adjustments and layout tweaks behind a small paywall for serious space enthusiasts who want to customize the map’s appearance.

As smartwatches continue to evolve, tools like Stargazer show that these devices are becoming much more than just workout trackers—they are becoming deeply personal tools tailored to very specific hobbies.
