Garmin Finally Acknowledges Fenix 8 Screen Bug Following Recent Firmware Updates

If you have noticed your Garmin Fenix 8 acting a bit unusual lately, you are definitely not alone. Owners of the popular smartwatch have been dealing with a frustrating screen bug where the display refuses to dim after being exposed to bright sunlight. Following widespread user complaints and our previous coverage of firmware updates 23.31 and 23.39, Garmin has officially stepped forward to address the issue.

What is Going Wrong with the Fenix 8 Screen?

The core of the problem stems from how the smartwatch handles ambient lighting changes. Users who keep the Always On Display (AOD) feature turned on while switching the wrist gesture off have reported that the AMOLED screen jumps to maximum brightness under strong sunlight.

However, when the wearer moves indoors or into a darker room, the watch gets stuck at full blast instead of dimming down. This unexpected behavior keeps the display overly bright, causing a noticeable and rapid drop in battery life over the course of the day.

Firmware Updates and Growing User Frustration

This display flaw first began surfacing following software version 23.31. Many users hoped that the subsequent release of the stable update 23.39 would clean up the loose ends and resolve these persistent bugs.

Unfortunately, for many owners, the problem carried right over into the newer software version, leaving watches still trapped at high brightness settings. Frustration has been mounting online, especially since these software hiccups followed earlier reports of sudden battery drain and sensor issues.

Garmin’s Official Statement

After weeks of user reports piling up on the official support forums, Garmin has finally broken its silence. A company representative posted an official update addressing the situation:

“Our engineers are aware of a concern that may cause the brightness to stay fully lit, after being in bright ambient conditions. There is a fix for this pending, and it will be released…”

While Garmin has confirmed that a software patch is on the way, the company has not yet shared an exact release date or specified which upcoming version will carry the fix. Until the patch rolls out, a quick temporary workaround is to simply tap the touchscreen or press a physical button to manually force the display back to its normal brightness level.

What Users Are Saying

The official Garmin forums have been active with frustrated owners sharing their experiences with the update cycle.

  • Derek87 voiced heavy criticism over the rollout, stating: “Shame on Garmin for releasing the public version with this bug after it was reported multiple times in the beta program. In my experience, this bug resulted in a dramatic reduction in battery endurance…”

  • Wires shared similar sentiments regarding the stability of recent builds: “Geebus Garmin! EVERYTHING you broke on the 23.xx beta you blindly rolled into 23.xx public? I dropped from your beta program solely because of how bad the beta program was, and then you force the update…”

  • Yago77 expressed weariness over recurring firmware bugs: “The same thing happens to me… though it’s hardly news that the people at Garmin make these kinds of mistakes, that they get reported, and they ignore them until several software versions later…”

With Garmin now officially acknowledging the glitch and promising a fix on the horizon, Fenix 8 owners will simply have to keep an eye out for the next software drop to finally put these brightness and battery drain issues to rest.
