Garmin has released a new beta software update, version 31.67, for its previous-generation bike computers. The software update is rolling out to owners of the Edge 1040, 840, and 540 models.
This update officially brings two new features that debuted on the newly released Edge 1060 down to the x40 series line, ensuring older devices remain up to date with Garmin’s latest cycling tools.
Major Feature Additions from the Edge 1060
The standout addition in beta version 31.67 is the integration of updated training and community tools originally built for the Edge 1060.
Cyclists using the Edge 1040, 840, or 540 can now access the enhanced GroupRide features, which allow riders to share routes, track group members in real time, and message fellow cyclists. The update also introduces the full Garmin Cycling Coach experience, giving riders access to adaptive, personalized training plans directly on their device displays.
Critical Fixes for Battery Life, LiveTrack, and Sensors
Along with the new software tools, Garmin resolved several persistent bugs that affected daily performance on x40 series units:
-
LiveTrack limits: Fixed a bug that caused LiveTrack sessions to shut down automatically after 24 hours of activity.
-
Battery drain: Addressed an issue where unit batteries were losing charge while the device was turned off or sitting idle.
-
Sensor accuracy: Corrected bugs causing invalid gear tracking mileage logs and fixed an issue where elevation data would randomly report zero.
-
System stability: Applied several minor bug fixes to prevent system crashes and improve general responsiveness.
How to Check for and Install Update 31.67
If your Edge computer is connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can download and install the beta update directly on the unit.
To check for the software update, navigate to the Main Menu, select System, tap About, and press Check For Updates. The device will automatically find and begin downloading version 31.67.
