Garmin rolls out new beta update 20.12 for Fenix 8, Tactix 8, and Enduro 3 models

Garmin is actively enhancing its line of high-end smartwatches with the introduction of the beta software update version 20.12. This significant update is being rolled out to owners of the Fenix 8, Fenix E, Enduro 3, Quatix 8, and Tactix 8 series devices, bringing a mix of new features and essential bug fixes designed to improve user experience and reliability. This beta phase allows users to test the changes and provide feedback before the final public release.

Key Feature Addition: Inline Skating Workout

A notable addition in version 20.12 is the new Inline Skating compatibility for Custom Workouts. This update caters to skaters by allowing them to incorporate inline skating sessions directly into their structured training plans. For those who enjoy varied athletic pursuits, this expands the utility of their device beyond typical running, cycling, and hiking activities, ensuring more accurate tracking and workout management for this specific sport

Essential Bug Fixes and Stability Improvements

Beyond new features, Garmin has focused heavily on addressing several key bugs that users have reported. One critical fix resolves an issue where headphones were not disconnecting properly after an ECG (Electrocardiogram) measurement was taken. This ensures user privacy and proper device function after a health-monitoring session.

Improvements have also been made to map and course creation. The update fixes a problem where the Outdoor Maps Plus Layer Selection Page didn’t initially pull in the user’s current location until the map was fully displayed. Furthermore, it corrects a glitch that was causing a straight line route to be created when generating a course using locations directly on the map menu, ensuring more accurate and usable navigation paths.

Correcting Workout and Device-Specific Anomalies

The beta release addresses a specific issue with a pre-loaded workout: the “Total Body Circuit 5” workout will now display the correct rep count, resolving a previous inconsistency that could disrupt training. Finally, a device-specific fix has been implemented for the Tactix series, ensuring the WX Radar Short Cut is now working correctly for quick access to weather information, a crucial feature for that line of tactical smartwatches.

How to Install the Update

To get the latest improvements and fixes on your compatible smartwatch, you’ll need to manually trigger the update process.

On your watch, navigate to:

  1. Menu
  2. System
  3. Software Update
  4. Check For Updates

Once the update is downloaded, the installation will proceed automatically. Garmin encourages beta users to test these changes and report any new or persistent issues.
