Garmin is rolling out beta software update 16.09 for several of its smartwatches, including the Instinct 3 AMOLED, Instinct 3 Solar, Instinct E, and Crossover AMOLED models. The new firmware brings a crucial system feature alongside multiple bug fixes and performance improvements.
New System and Tracking Upgrades
The headline addition in this release is Recovery Mode, a new built-in safety tool that automatically kicks in to help the smartwatch boot up if it runs into serious software errors during startup. Water sports enthusiasts also get a helpful performance boost, as Garmin refined its tracking algorithms to deliver much better wave detection accuracy while recording Surf activities.
Bug Fixes and Language Adjustments
Garmin cleared up several bugs across the system in this patch. The annoying system lag when opening and browsing through the calendar menu has been eliminated for smoother navigation. Connect IQ app users will no longer deal with unexpected crashes when launching workouts from third-party tools, and the DogTrack feature now updates its pointer location reliably. Additionally, Garmin updated system translations across multiple supported languages for better clarity.
Installation Instructions
Users enrolled in the beta testing program can manually download the update directly on their watch by heading to the Main menu, opening Settings, selecting System, then choosing Software Update and tapping Check for Updates.
