Garmin is moving fast to help cyclists. Just 13 days after their last update, they have released a new beta software version (31.28). This is for the Edge 1050, 1040, 850, 840, 550, and 540. This update is very important because it fixes a major problem that was making some devices stop working entirely.
Ending the Boot-Loop Nightmare
The most important fix in this update is for a “boot-loop” problem. Recently, many people reported that their devices were stuck restarting over and over again. This happened after they downloaded the TopoActive 2026.10 maps. I previously wrote an article telling my readers not to update their maps because it was “bricking” their devices. This new software finally fixes that big mistake, so your device should work normally again.
Stability Returns for eBike and Gear Tracking
Garmin also fixed a few other annoying bugs. For people who use Shimano eBikes, the device will no longer crash while you are riding. They also fixed the “Gear Tracking” feature. Before, the gear you picked would sometimes disappear after a ride. Now, the correct item will stay selected and visible so you can keep track of your equipment.
Cleaning Up the User Interface
The update makes the screen look better, too. They fixed the battery icon and made sure the text on the timer screen is lined up correctly. Also, if you use the Basecamp program on your computer to plan your trips, that should now work without any issues. You can see the full change log in the picture below!

How to Install the Fix
If you want to get these fixes right now, make sure your Edge is connected to Wi-Fi. Then, go to the Main Menu, select System, tap About, and choose Check For Updates. After all the trouble with the recent map update, this is a very welcome fix for every Garmin user.
