Garmin has started sending out a fresh beta update for its Forerunner 970 and 570 smartwatches. The new software, labeled version 18.23, is packed with bug fixes designed to make the watches run much more smoothly and stop unexpected crashes.
Tackling Random Restarts and Crashes

If your watch has been turning off on its own, this update should bring some relief. Garmin fixed several glitches that were causing the devices to reboot randomly. The update addresses crashes that happened when saving a workout, viewing the morning report, or triggering the incident detection safety feature. A bug that caused the morning and evening reports to stay on the screen indefinitely has also been cleaned up.
Smoother Audio and Spectator Messages
Garmin also focused heavily on fixing audio glitches. Previously, receiving a spectator voice message could cause the watch to reset or block other voice alerts from working afterward. Some users also reported that spectator messages wouldn’t play at all if their music was paused. This update fixes all of those audio issues, along with a bug that made the music volume slider jump around and stop responding.
Better Workout Tracking and Voice Controls
For runners and cyclists, the most important fix might be for GPS accuracy. Version 18.23 stops pace and speed from suddenly dropping out, which was a common headache during interval workouts. On top of that, Garmin fixed the smart voice features. The watch should now reliably hear its wake word and actually respond to your voice commands without freezing up.
How to Get the Update
The software comes with minor translation updates and smaller bug tweaks as well. If you are enrolled in Garmin’s beta program, you don’t have to wait for the automatic push. You can grab the download manually by going to your watch’s Main Menu > Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates.
