Garmin is officially adding two popular workout tools to its lineup. The smartwatch maker announced that it has bought TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, two platforms that connect athletes with professional coaches and paid training routines.
While the companies have not revealed how much money changed hands, the move makes one thing clear: Garmin wants to offer more than just hardware, as it continues to grow its paid digital features.
What Do TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic Offer?
The two apps focus on different sides of fitness training:
-
TrainingPeaks is designed mainly for endurance athletes, like runners, cyclists, and triathletes. It offers custom coaching plans created by real trainers, which currently cost users $134.99 per year.
-
TrainHeroic focuses heavily on strength and conditioning. It sells workout courses, with some programs costing up to $49 per month alongside one-time purchase options.
As part of the deal, over 120 employees from both companies will join Garmin.
A Shift Toward Paid Services
For years, Garmin built its reputation on solid sports watches and free tracking features through the Garmin Connect app. However, this double acquisition aligns with a broader industry shift toward subscription models.
Garmin already charges for several extras, including Outdoor Maps+, Tacx Premium bike workouts, Golf memberships, and satellite services for inReach devices.
Because TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic rely on paid memberships, it is unlikely that Garmin will make these new tools completely free for users.
What Lies Ahead for Users
Garmin has not yet shared its full plans for how the apps will fit into its existing products. It remains to be seen whether TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic will continue as standalone apps or eventually merge into Garmin’s main ecosystem under a bundled premium tier.
For now, current users can expect both platforms to keep operating as usual while Garmin integrates its new team and technology behind the scenes.
