Garmin is getting ready to drop a brand-new premium smartwatch. A fresh regulatory filing with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) shows that a high-end Garmin device has just passed certification under the model number A05170. While the official name is still hidden in the documents, everything points to this being the upcoming Garmin Fenix 9.
How We Confirmed It Was Actually a Watch
When new FCC documents first drop, it can be tricky to tell what kind of hardware you are looking at. At first, we were not sure if the device was a smartwatch or just a handheld tracker like an inReach communicator.
However, after digging deeper into the official FCC filing, we spotted a drawing of the watch inside the electronic label section. The diagram clearly shows a classic round watch case. On top of that, the paperwork explicitly lists it as an “extremity-worn” wearable designed to be held near the mouth and head, which usually means wrist-based voice calling capabilities.
Dual Connectivity: Both Satellite and Cellular
The biggest highlight of this new model is its advanced wireless capabilities. Garmin appears to be combining both cellular LTE and 3GPP satellite connectivity in a single device.

Satellite Messaging: Users can send emergency signals and messages even when they are far off the grid and away from cell towers.

Cellular Data: LTE connectivity allows for standalone calls, texts, and quick data syncing on the go.
The device also supports standard connection features, including 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for fast downloads, Bluetooth Low Energy, ANT/ANT+ for external sports sensors (like heart rate straps or bike power meters), and NFC for Garmin Pay.
Built Like a True Flagship
To make sure this is a full smartwatch rather than a budget fitness tracker, Garmin tested the watch with three distinct strap materials: silicone, nylon, and titanium.
The presence of high-end materials like titanium, combined with NFC payment support and satellite radios, strongly signals that this is Garmin’s next top-tier outdoor watch—the successor to the popular Fenix 8.
Launch Expected Very Soon
Devices usually show up in public FCC databases only when they are near final production and getting ready for market release. While Garmin has not officially announced a date yet, this certification means an official reveal of the Fenix 9 could happen in the coming weeks.
